Saddle Tramps has played an integral part in furthering the spirit and upholding the traditions of Texas Tech University since our founding in 1936 by then Head Cheerleader, Arch Lamb. Early Texas ranchers would hire a ‘saddle tramp’ on the basis of his ability and willingness to tackle any task assigned to him. He would move on after a while, having contributed to the improvement of the ranch. It was a fitting title for our organization: Saddle Tramps would be hard workers when in college at Tech, moving on after their college years were done.
Saddle Tramps is a male non-political organization and our members carry the responsibility of maintaining high morale, respectable conduct, and a harmonious relationship among the Texas Tech and Lubbock communities. The duties of our members are focused with this goal in mind, resulting in a variety of complex and challenging activities that are their own reward. Our members thus exhibit strength of character and a keen sense of duty on which uncommon comradeship and impassioned intent ensure a job well done whatever the odds.
Saddle Tramps supports Texas Tech Athletics together with our sister organization, High Riders. We primarily support football, basketball and baseball but we are always ready to support other causes, including a range of community service events including Relay for Life. Each year we take it upon ourselves to come up with an official Game-day t-shirt in support of Texas Tech Athletics. Our other purpose is to uphold the traditions of Texas Tech University and we do this by supporting and actively participating in events such as the Homecoming Bonfire, Carol of Lights and Arbor Day. We also hold fun social and formal events throughout the year that we always look forward to. Our members also hold the rare opportunity of becoming Raider Red – Texas Tech’s official Mascot.
Saddle Tramps is a fun, high-energy student organization with emphasis on quality rather than quantity of members. We thus limit our numbers at one hundred active members. It is a privilege and an honor to be accepted into our organization.
